Is Your Car Ready For Winter Driving

David Bilsborough writes about thinking "winter" and is my car ready?

The first few frosty mornings are with us and some of you may have already suffered with a flat battery and poor handling in the icy conditions? What can you do to prevent you and your car falling prey to the British winter time.

Falling temperatures and damp and icy road conditions usually finally kill that slow to start car. Batteries are being asked to perform more and more with all of a cars electrical components. On average a batteries life can be no more than 3 years at high service. Batteries are usually sealed and once they become slow to start a car, then not changing the battery will undoubtedly leave you open for the dreaded "flat battery" just when its freezing and its late at night.

Wiper blades. Cheap to keep on top of but so many cars that we see have very poor wiping of the windscreen through broken and worn out wiper blades. Smearing your windscreen is telling you to change the blades. Very easy and cheap to do, something you can do yourself at home on your drive.

Tyres. Pressures and condition. Again we see so many cars with incorrect pressures and badly worn tyres that it is truly amazingly bad. With a budget new tyre costing under £50 why wait until you can't stop the car due to a badly worn tyre? All of your cars tyre pressures are inside the cars handbook or if you haven't got one they are stuck on either inside a door or inside the fuel flap.

Brake Pads & Brake Discs. Again so easily missed yet very costly for your safety. Have these checked with your service insist on the workshop remove the wheels so they can exactly see their conditions. Brakes pads fitted around £75 or less with both for around £150. Why wouldn't you?

Lights. Check that all your cars lights are in good order and working. Weekly checks will be great but at least every month.
